Geographical informational database on radiation problems of the Arctic North
Abstract. A geographic information database of the potential radioactive contamination sources has been designed, it is based on those information sources that are verifiable and publicly available through the media and/or the Internet. A number of computer maps based on the designed database is presented as an example of potentialities of geographic information systems (GIS). GIS would help in visualizing the relationship between nuclear objects and geographic features in the Russian Arctic. GIS also would help to perform such tasks as inventory, registration, government regulation of nuclear objects, and mathematical simulation of situations associated with these objects.
