Perspective methods of conservation of population diversity of anadromous salmon fish in northern and far-eastern regions of Russia

The paper describes methods of conservation of the diversity of anadromous salmon fish populations of the genera Salmo and Oncorhynchus in northern and far-eastern regions of Russia. The methods have been developed on the basis of privately obtained data and data taken from literature sources. The paper reveals new problems of biological character arisen on the background of former issues of conservation of diversity and sustainability of salmon populations related to different negative aspects of legal and illegal fishing. In particular among these new problems are existing technologies for hatchery rearing, industrial fish farming, intentional and non-intentional introduction of alien species, and rapidly increasing recreational fishing. To decrease the level of environmental risks related to the aforementioned problems, effective management actions and decisions are required as well as further studying of biological aspects of these problems. The paper shows that the main task of anadromous salmon resources management, irrespective of the way of industrial or recreational fishing, is the conservation of native populations, i.e. natural filling of spawning grounds with wild fishes. To obtain this, wild fishes must be allowed to rich spawning grounds in numbers sufficient for supporting the population balance.
