Synthetic ivanyukite – perspective ion-exchange material

Abstract. The ion-exchange properties of a synthetic analogue of ivanyukite-Na towards cesium cations have been examined. Electron microscopy, powder X-ray diffraction and microprobe analysis have shown that this synthetic product is identical to the natural pharmacosiderite-type titanosilicate ivanyukite-Na. It has been found that synthetic ivanyukite has high ion-exchange capacity for cesium and has an avalanche-like kinetics of corresponding exchange reaction. Hence, ivanyukite can be recommended for the extremely rapid and effective removal 137Cs from nuclear waste solutions.
