High-temperature decomposition of tremolite from the Kola Superdeep Well (12,148 meters): Electrical resistivity, heat capacity and spectroscopic studies

PDFRead

Abstract. The in situ stress state within the Earth's crust at the superdeep borehole (SG-3) area has been poorly studied. The most reliable data on the regularities of stress distribution within the upper layers of the Earth's crust have been obtained from direct stress measurements either in excavations or in boreholes using special techniques. Stress measurements were impossible during SG-3 drilling. Geophysical measurements data from the borehole and modelling data provide only indirect information on the stress state in the host rock, making the present notions unreliable and unprecise. Closely located to SG-3 are the MMC "Pechenganickel" mines being within 5-15 km distance of SG-3 and at the depth of 0.7-1.0 km from the day surface (Severny, Kotselvaara mines and some others). A number of stress measurements have been made in underground excavations and the data obtained could be useful in refining the problem under consideration. The most significant measurement data have been presented below.
